I've heard it waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay to often this past week. If it's not, she's acting like a preemie, it's, she's reading the book on preemies. Quit reading the book, Marlo!!
Good grief, I think my hair is going gray just thinking about it.
Marlo had a scare this week....or should I say, Marlo gave us a scare that made us both sick to our stomach this week.
After being off for the weekend, our primary nurse was back Monday morning. Marlo was acting like her usual cute self, with one little difference. Monday morning she had blood in her stool. This came as a shock to us all, and was alarming to the nurse and doctor that were there at the time it was happening.
It's an automatic antibiotic course and a stop of all feeding...for up to 10 days. UGH! The worry is what is called NEC for short. In a nutshell, it means infection in the intestines that requires surgery to remove the intestines, because essentially the intestine dies, and can cause sepsis. None of those things are good. Preemies cannot handle this sort of thing, so it's not something they fool around with. Anytime there is blood in the stool this is what they suspect.
Thankfully, x-rays have not shown anything that would say this was NEC. It's possible that our wonderful nurse caught it before it could go down that rocky road, but it's also possible that it was just irritation from the junk they are adding to the breastmilk to make it have more calories and she wasn't tolerating it.
So, we are in the clear with that. She still has to finish the course of antibiotics, just in case, but all things point to nothing of consequence. What an answer to prayer. Something was going on, not sure what, but the good news is, it wasn't as bad as they thought.
We have spent the week watching and waiting. Marlo gave us all a scare, one that we want to put behind us. I think it's time for Miss Marlo to put the book down. I know it would make Mommy and Daddy feel a lot better if she did. :)
Keep praying, she still has a long way to go. Coming home seems so far away.

mommy blogger. As a mother that has suffered the loss of multiple children while becoming a mother of the bride to our oldest, raising 2 young adults, an 8 year old preemie and a 6 year old tornado, I have a lot to share. I can't guarantee you will agree with everything I say, but I think you may just enjoy it. This is our life, the good, bad and ugly.
